The Indonesian police were intensively chasing people who had shot Drew Nicholas Grant, an Australian national who worked for PT Freeport International in Tembagapura, Mimika District, Papua Province, on Saturday.
Deputy Head of the Indonesian Police`s Public Relations Division Brig. Gen. Sulistyo Ishak told ANTARA here on Sunday that a joint team from the Timika Police, Papua Provincial Police and the Indonesian Police Headquarters, was hunting down the unknown people who shot the Australian to death.
"So far, there is no information from the chase. Moreover, on Sunday morning (July 12) at around 10 am Eastern Indonesian Standard Time (WIT), again there were shootings at Mile - 51 at PT. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mining area which killed Markus Rante Alo," he said.
According to Brig. Gen. Ishak, following the shooting which killed Markus Rante Alo, there were shoot outs between security personnel of Densus 88 (Police Special Unit) and an unknown armed group at Mile - 51, Tembagapura.
"We are after them and at the same time investigating the crime scene (TKP) for legal enforcement process," Brig. Gen. Sulistyo Ishak.
The police would continue dealing with the shootings until the peaceful condition in Papua has really been restored, he said.
An autopsy had been carried out on the killed Australian at Cipto Mangunkusumo Public Hospital in Jakarta on Sunday (July 12) after the victim had been evacuated from Papua, the police official said.
The autopsy had involved medical personnel of the Police Headquarters and the Medical Faculty of the University of Indonesia.
Drew Nicolas Grant was in a car driven by Jon Biggs together with Maju Panjaitan and Lidan Madandan when the car was shot at Mile 53, on his way to Timika.
The shooting occurred at 05:30 am local time at Mile 53, and killed the Australian who worked at the Expert Munical Construction Department of PT Freeport.
