Six countries congratulate Indonesia on successful presidential polls

Six heads of state/government had congratulated the Indonesian government on its success of the direct presidential election which was held on July 8, 2009.

Presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal made the remarks here on Friday after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono received his Palestinian counterpart Mahmud Abbas` congratulatory message on Indonesia`s success in holding the election.

"The six heads of state/government who had sent congratulatory messages are Malaysian Prime Minister, the Timor Leste President, Singapore Prime Minister, Australian Prime Minister, South Korea`s President, Palestinian President and the Philippine President," Patti Djalal said.

The spokesman said that the congratulations were a reflection of international recognition and respect of the implementation of democracy in Indonesia.

On Thursday (July 9), the US embassy in Jakarta issued Ambassador Cameron R Hume`s statement congratulating Indonesia holding the presidential election.

"We congratulate the government and people of Indonesia for an orderly and peaceful presidential election," the ambassador said.

The presidential election once again showed the commitment of the Indonesian people to their dynamic democracy, he added.

He also congratulated President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for his success.
Earlier, Palestinian Ppresident Mahmud Abbas in a telephone-conversation with Yudhoyono on Friday at 6.35 pm, conveyed his congratulatory message on the success of the election.

In his response, Yudhoyono who is the incumbent president thanked Abbas and pointed out that Indonesia always supports the struggle of the Palestinian people for independence.

Three presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs competed in the election, namely former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate retired Lt. General Prabowo Subianto, president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who pairs with Boediono, and incumbent vice president M Jusuf Kalla and retired general Wiranto.(antaranews.com)

Koalisi TKI Tolak RUU Upah Minimum Hongkong

RI-UAE trade far less than actual potential

Indonesian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) M. Wahid Supriyadi said while the trade relations between the two countries in 2008 increased 44 percent to 2.18 billion US dollars, the matter is still no picture of the true potentials of the two nations.

Indonesia, with a population of more than 230 million, and as the biggest economic power in South East Asia and a high consumer confidence, Indonesia is actually a good trade partner for the UAE, the ambassador told 50 Rotary Club members mostly successful businessmen in Dubai.

The Indonesian embassy in Abu Dhabi said Wednesday, Indonesia`s economic growth in the first quarter reached 4.4 percent, the third highest in Asia after China 6.1 percent and India 5.7 percent.

He said this was caused by the high domestic consumption, while Indonesia is not too dependent on its exports which accounted for merely one third of the GDP. He also quoted a survey by Nielsen

Company on the consumer confidence index in Indonesia which is the highest in the world with 104 points followed by Denmark (102) and India (99).

He also said that unlike the neighbors Thailand and Singapore, Indonesia is rather strange to the people of the UAP.

This fact is apparent from the number of UAP tourists coming to Indonesia reaching only several thousands, compared to those visiting Thailand (80,000), Singapore (51,168), and Malaysia (34,994). The low tourist visits was also caused by the relatively small budget for Indonesia`s tourist promotion, he added.

But the envoy believed that Indonesia has more diversified potentials and many leading travel magazines had even called Bali as the most beautiful island in the world.

Speaking of investment, he said, UAP investment in Indonesia had been relatively small, only 22 million US dollars.

According to data at the Indonesian embassy, right now at least eight UAP companies had expressed commitment to invest more than 7 billion US dollars in the tourism sector in Lombok (Emaar), the construction of Asia`s biggest shipbuilding yard (Dubai Drydock World and Fabtech International), development of an epicentral business zone in Kuningan (Limitless), and in the coal sector (RAK Mineral and Metal Investment, RMMI).

He hoped the investment would be realized in a not too distant future.
During a question and answer session, most of the Rotary Club members said they have never come to Indonesia due to the minimum information about the country.

After the briefing by ambassador Wahid, many of them expressed interest in coming to Indonesian for investment and attend the Indonesian Trade Exhibition (TEI) 2009.

One of them, Abdullah H Alawi, owner of Al Nasr Group, expressed his interest in investment in Indonesia`s rubber plantations.

On the occasion, the Indonesian envoy made a presentation entitled "Indonesia the Least Understood Global Player; Its Relations with the UAE.

No plan to take Ambalat issue to ICJ

The Malaysian government has no immediate plan to take the overlapping claims on Ambalat waters to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay told the Senate Monday.

The government would only do so as a last resort, he said in reply to Senator Maijol Mahap.

Kohilan Pillay said Malaysia was always in favor of negotiation process in matters pertaining to maritime border.

He also said that the Ambalat issue would not affect the cordial relations between Malaysia and Indonesia despite the issue being played up by the Indonesian media, especially in the run up to the Indonesian presidential election on Wednesday.

He said that Malaysia was confident that both countries would be able to find amicable solutions to the issue. (*)

Garuda to resume European flights in 2010

Garuda Indonesia is likely to resume flights to Europe in the first half of 2010 after the EU Air Safety Committee recommends the lifting of the flight ban on four Indonesian carriers.

Garuda Communications Chief Pujobroto made the remarks on Friday in response to the decisions reached by the committee at its three-day meeting which ended in Brussels, Belgium, on Thursday.

One of the decisions is recommending the lifting of the EU flight ban on Garuda Indonesia, Mandala, AirFast and Premi Air.

The decisions will formally be issued nearly two weeks after being translated into 22 EU official languages and signed by the board of commissioners for transportation affairs.

Pujobroto said Garuda positively welcomed the decision and would resume its flights to Europe particularly to Amsterdam in the first phase.

It would take nearly nine months for the national flag carrier to make preparations for flight resumption, he said.

He said Garuda was still undecided about the types of planes to resume the European flights.

"But as an alternative these aircraft could be A 330-200s. Therefore, we need one stopover or cannot serve a direct flight," he said.

If all the 10 Boeing 777s ordered by Gardua were to be delivered nearly in late 2010 or early 2011, it would serve non-stop flights to a number of European cities, he said.

The European Commission (EC) first imposed a flight ban on all Indonesian carriers, forbidding them from entering the region, in July 2007 following a series of fatal accidents.

Comprehensive efforts have since been made to remedy the safety shortcomings in order to meet the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

RI stepping up swine flu precautions at in`tl airports

Indonesia will step up checks on pilots and crew arriving from abroad to anticipate the swine flu threat, a Jakarta international airport official said.

"Tightened control will especially be done at international airports such as the Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta," the administrator of the Soekarno-Hatta airport, Edward A Silooy, said here on Monday.

He said checks would be done using a body scanner on pilots and crew before they leave the airport. "The checks will be a must for pilots and crew," he said.

A pilot was found infected with a swine flu after visiting several foreign countries recently.

Silooy said pilots and air crew were vulnarable to spread of a swine flu virus particularly those serving overseas routes.

"The move is taken to anticipate spread of the virus through pilots and air crew. They are vulnarable to swine flu infection. The tightening of health checks will be done continuously to prevent spread of the virus," he said.

Transport minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said after a coordination meeting on people`s welfare that he would notify pilots and crew serving countries affected by the virus to increase caution.

"We will send a notice to airman and an announcement to shipping crew to be more alert towards the disease and to ask passengers to fill in health alert cards," he said.

Air and shipping crew from infected countries also have to ask their passengers to follow flu control procedures set by the government including scanning at airport and wearing a mask minimally three days after arrival, he said.(*)

Prospect of RI`s economy in 2010 good: Observer

Indonesia`s economic prospect will be better if the world economy begins to recover IN 2010, director of Center for Information and Development Studies (Cides), Umar Juoro said.

"If the world economy recovers in 2010, Indonesia`s economic growth could return to the six percent level," he said here on Sunday.

He said that a six percent growth in Indonesia`s economy would be able to boost exports and imports, which would also have impact on domestic and foreign investment.

"The economy would be developed further if the infrastructure development boosted significantly and the stimuli polices could be implemented perfectly," he said.

Juoro said that the economic challenges in the future included infrastructure development and they way how to balance economic growth.

The problem in the infrastructure development is not about financing but about structural matters such as land clearance, tariffs and other legal certainties.

"The structural problems could not be solved soon but improvement made in stages would boost a better economic development," Juoro said.

Referring to the economic growth in the current global financial crisis, Juoro said that in the first quarter of 2009 Indonesia`s economic growth was recorded at 4.4 percent, which was supported by people`s consumption which grew 5.8 percent and government expenditures.

He said that although the country`s exports experienced a negative growth by 20 percent, the current account and trade balance remained positive as the negative growth of imports was bigger than that of exports.

Of late, the rupiah value and capital market index have also gained significant strength. This is because Indonesia`s economic prospect was considered goods so that investors invested their funds in a market which they expected to provide high gains.

"The rupiah value and capital market index are predicted to continue to gain strength, although in certain times they would occasionally weaken," he said.

So, he said, it is not an exaggeration to say that the rupiah will reach Rp9,500 level per US dollar and the capital market index will reach 2,300.
