No plan to take Ambalat issue to ICJ

The Malaysian government has no immediate plan to take the overlapping claims on Ambalat waters to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay told the Senate Monday.

The government would only do so as a last resort, he said in reply to Senator Maijol Mahap.

Kohilan Pillay said Malaysia was always in favor of negotiation process in matters pertaining to maritime border.

He also said that the Ambalat issue would not affect the cordial relations between Malaysia and Indonesia despite the issue being played up by the Indonesian media, especially in the run up to the Indonesian presidential election on Wednesday.

He said that Malaysia was confident that both countries would be able to find amicable solutions to the issue. (*)
