Defense Ministry postpones purchase of submarines

The Defense Ministry is postponing until 2011 its plan to purchase two submarines for the Navy due to limited fund allocation, a senior official said.

"Although the government will increase the fund allocation by 20 percent in the 2010 state budget, the increase is not yet enough to purchase main weapon system such as submarines and new jet-fighters.

The increase in the budget will be prioritized to maintenance services," Director General for Defense Facilities of the Defense Ministry Rear Marshal Eris Herryanto said in Yogyakarta on Wednesday.

Speaking on the sidles of the 62nd Air Force`s Service Day, he said that the plan to purchase two submarines for the Navy was postponed for the time being.

The postponement was done following the government`s decision to delay the procurement of new strategic main weapon system.

"We continue to study producer countries from where we would purchase the weapons but we would not realize it in the near future because the purchase is postponed until 2011," he said.

Previously Indonesia has put out to tender the plan procurement of two submarines in 2010. For the procurement of the Navy`s submarines there are several countries which are expected to supply them, such as Germany (U-209), South Korea (Changbogo), Russia and France (scorpen).

In the meantime, the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) is targeting to increase the readiness of its fleet by 15 percent when the defense budget in 2010 is increased by Rp7 trillion, Air Force Chief Marshal Subandrio said.

"With the budget increase we will be focusing on maintenance and purchase of spare parts which could not be bought last year due to the tight budget. With this focus we hope we can increase our flight readiness by 15 percent," he said here on Wednesday.

In the draft 2010 state budget the government increased the defense budget by 20 percent from that in the previous year so that there would be an increase of Rp7 trillion.
