Kwik challenges Boediono for debate on neo-liberalism

Kwik Gian Gie, a former chief economic minister, has challenged vice presidential candidate Boediono to hold a debate on neo-liberalism and its practice in Indonesia to prove the latter`s real predispositions as an economist.

"I challenge Boediono and other members of the Berkeley mafia to hold a debate about it (neo-liberalism) because I am quite convinced Boediono is in a position where he hates the state`s role in the market," Kwik said in a public discussion themed "Self-reliant Economy versus Neo-liberal Economy" here Friday.

He said he had a lot of proof that Boediono, former economic affairs coordinating minister in President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s cabinet and later Bank Indonesia governor, was a strong advocate of the free market and against any form of state intervention.

Therefore, he said, he very much doubted the sincerity of Boediono`s recent statement that the market needed to be regulated by the state and Indonesia must be freed from IMF and World Bank intervention.

In Kwik`s view, Boediono`s appointment as Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s running mate in the upcoming presidential election was all the more proof that the present administration was far from committed to achieving economic self-reliance, and that this would remain so if the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Boediono pair won the election.

Kwik was coordinating minister for economic affairs in the Megawati Soekarnoputri administration from 2001 to 2004.
