Indonesia beats Japan 3-0 in Sudirman Cup

Indonesia beat Japan 3-0 in the first round of the Sudirman Cup, a biennial world badminton event, in Guangzhou, China, on Sunday, state news agency Antara reported.

Men's singles player Sony Dwi Kuncoro sealed Indonesia's victory by defeating Kenichi Tago in 21-17, 21-16 straight sets.

Indonesia gained two more points from its men's doubles and women's singles teams. World No. 1 men's doubles pair Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan overpowered the Japanese pair Noriyasu Hirata and Hirokatsu Hashimoto 21-14 and 21-11.



Women's single player Maria Kristin defeated Sayaka Sato 18-21, 21-11 and 21-19.

The Indonesian Badminton Association's (PBSI) 35-member squad for the Sudirman Cup includes 12 men's and eight women's players, seven coaches, two paramedics and six officials.

Indonesia won the championship, named after Indonesian badminton legend and PBSI founder Dick Sudirman, for the first and only time in 1989.

China has won the competition six times and Korea has taken home the title three times. Indonesia has finished as runner-up six times.
