Indonesian, Malaysian customs conduct coordinated patrols in Malacca Strait

Indonesia`s tax and customs excise directorate general and Malaysia` customs office have been carrying out coordinated marine patrols in the Malacca Strait since July 21 and will end the activity on August 4, 2009.

The 15th coordinated marine patrols in the Malacca Strait (Patkor Kastima) are a routine activity held annually by the two countries since 1994, a press statement from the finance ministry said here on Friday.


The event was officially opened at Tanjung Balai Karimun, Riau Province, on July 19-21, 2009, and it will officially be closed at the Johor Customs Tower, Malaysia, on August 4, 2009.

The coordinated marine patrols were expected to give added values and significant contribution to the two nations, among other things strengthening regional cooperation between tax and custom excise office in Riau as well as other customs offices near Malaysia.

The cooperative relations between the Indonesian and Malaysian customs offices have been established since long time ago through various bilateral meetings. The Malacca Straits plays a crucial role in the trade between Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Malacca Strait is among the world`s busies shipping line routes and prone goods smuggling. Over 50,000 vessels pass through the strait per year, carrying about one-quarter of the world`s traded goods including oil, Chinese manufactures, and Indonesian coffee.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore have established cooperation to maintain security in the Malacca Strait Since July 2004. The trilateral coordinated patrol scheme is codenamed MALSINDO Malacca Straits Coordinated Patrols.

Since the joint patrols began to be carried out, the crime rate in the 500-mile long strait has decreased by about 70 percent.

The control points of the coordinated patrols are at Belawan and Batam (Indonesia), Lumut (Malaysia), and Changi (Singapore). The control point will also include Pukhet (Thailand) when Thailand officially joins the coordinated patrols.
